Alexis Sanchez has returned to Chile while he continues recovering from his hamstring injury, and is expected not to be back until 2019.

According to Sky Sports, Sanchez flew into Santiago earlier this week and is having treatment with members of the Chile national team's medical staff.

The Manchester United forward injured himself in training last Thursday and faces a fairly lengthy spell on the sidelines.

He is now in Chile spending time with the national team's doctors while he recovers from it

United boss Jose Mourinho said: 'No scans yet but the player is experienced, the player knows what the injury is. And also, from the top of my experience, the painful scream, and the way the injury happened, I know that this is going to be for a long time.

'It is not a little muscular injury that, in one week or 10 days, the player is ready.'

Sanchez is reportedly looking for an escape route out of Old Trafford, and is hoping that Paris Saint-Germain will be the team to whisk him away in January.

Sanchez is expected to be out for the rest of the year, leaving Mourinho short another player

However, his £500,000 per week wages, and this latest hamstring injury, may prove prohibitive for the French club.

Sanchez has missed games against Southampton and Arsenal, and if he is expected to miss the rest of 2018, he won't feature in at least the next six of United's matches.

Manchester United are set to face Fulham, Valencia, Liverpool, Cardiff City, Huddersfield, and Bournemouth before the end of the year.

Alexis Sanchez has only completed a full 90 minutes for the club once this season in the league, in their opening game against Leicester. He has 10 appearances in 15 games, and hasn't found the form he once had at Arsenal, scoring just one goal and getting two assists.
