Alexis Sanchez admits Manchester United were powerless to prevent Lionel Messi from knocking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side out of the Champions League after another European masterclass.

Leading 1-0 from last week's first leg at Old Trafford, Barcelona's record goalscorer put the tie beyond doubt with two goals in the space of four first half minutes, the first a trademark run and shot into the far corner and the second a result of a huge David de Gea error.

United missed several presentable opportunities in the opening stages but were unable to create anything of note after Messi stamped his authority on the match and conceded again just past the hour mark when Philippe Coutinho bent an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

'They played very well,' admitted Sanchez.

'We had very clear chances, but this is football, this is the Champions League.

'The truth is that the first goal was a very nice goal.

United must now refocus their efforts on securing a top four place in the Premier League and Solskjaer hopes Sanchez's return could prove pivotal.
