Arsenal have been charged by the FA for failing to control their supporters after a fan ran on to the pitch and pushed Manchester United's Chris Smalling during their Premier League clash earlier this month.

Granit Xhaka and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang scored as Unai Emery's side picked up a crucial 2-0 win against their rivals in the race for the top four.

But the result was overshadowed by the fan shoving Smalling just hours after Aston Villa star Jack Grealish was punched by a during their derby with Birmingham.

'Arsenal FC has been charged with breaches of FA Rule E20(a)and (b),' an FA statement read.

'It is alleged the club failed to ensure that its spectator(s) conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and refrained from encroaching onto the pitch during the Premier League fixture against Manchester United on Sunday March 10.

'They have until March 22 to respond.'

A man was arrested on suspicion of common assault after running on to the pitch and pushing Smalling at the Emirates in the 69th minute.

Shortly before Aubameyang scored a penalty, he seemed to briefly confront Smalling after making physical contact and then went on to celebrate with the Arsenal players.

After the shocking incident, an Arsenal spokesman said: 'We utterly condemn the behaviour of the individual who ran onto the pitch and approached Chris Smalling during the match.

'We would like to apologise to Chris and Manchester United, and are pleased that the individual was apprehended and arrested.

'We will be working closely with the Metropolitan Police in their investigation. The individual will also be banned from Arsenal matches home and away. Our matchday staff receive ongoing training on managing incidents such as this.'
