Arsenal are back on the trail of Ruben Dias and could be prepared to spend big to get the right replacement for Laurent Koscielny.

The Daily Mail reports that Arsenal have renewed their interest in the Benfica defender, who has a release clause in the region of £57million.

That price put off the Gunners at the start of the window, but after scouring the market and potentially losing out to Tottenham on a deal for William Saliba, the Gunners are set to swoop.

Skipper Laurent Koscielny’s refusal to go on tour with the club has only heightened Unai Emery’s need for a centre-back and Arsenal’s need is great.

Koscielny, 33, is now facing disciplinary action from the club after Arsenal opened proceedings against the Frenchman, who is reported to have a three-year deal on the table from Rennes.

Paying Dias’ release clause would wipe out Arsenal’s reported £40million transfer budget and it’s likely that Arsenal will try an negotiate a deal which would seen a smaller initial down payment with the remainder in instalments.

The 22-year-old Portugal international impressed last season, making more than 50 appearances in all competitions as Benfica clinched the league title.

He was linked with Manchester United earlier in the summer, but the Reds were put off when Benfica threatened to bump up the player’s release clause.
