Manchester United have agreed personal terms with Sporting playmaker Bruno Fernandes and now only need to settle on a fee with the Portuguese club to complete the transfer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been eager to bolster his midfield options this month, particularly after recent injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay, and personally scouted Fernandes in action against Porto last week.

Sporting chiefs travelled to England to meet United and discuss a deal worth around £60million, though the structure of the payments – and whether any loan players will be included – are still being negotiated.

Nevertheless, the deal is far enough along that United were granted permission to speak to Fernandes and, according to The Telegraph, he has agreed terms on a contract.

Now United just have to finalise a deal with Sporting, who have turned down the offer of taking goalkeeper Joel Pereira as part of the deal and fear they cannot afford to pay Marcos Rojo’s wages.

The Portuguese side are also looking to keep Fernandes until Friday so he can play against rivals Benfica, which looks increasingly likely to be his farewell appearance for the club.

Unfortunately, that means Fernandes will not be registered in time to take on Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

He could be at Anfield in spite of that, though, with United ready to roll out the red carpet and fly him in to England to watch the match from the stands.

Solskjaer has been very open about his desire to bring in reinforcements this month if the right player is available.

‘You can see the squad and sometimes you think, yeah, one or two additions would do nicely because we are building towards something,’ the Norwegian said earlier this month.

‘It just depends on if what we think will be right for us will be available. Of course it’s playing on our decision-making when we’ve got two players out for a bit, Scott for two months and Paul for a month.

‘That gives us less options and we have loads of games and important games but it still has to be right and that’s the big point here, if someone is available and something is possible we’ll do it. We’re looking at one or two.’
