Controversial proposals to change the UEFA Champions League look unlikely to be agreed this year.

The Premier League has been outspoken against the dramatic changes to the competition with Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward one of those resisting the proposals.

They would like to see eight-team groups in the Champions League instead of the current four.

The idea was to allow sides who make it through to the latter stages of the Champions League to compete again the following year, meaning they could perform poorly in their domestic league but potentially still qualify for the premier European competition.

However, the meeting between European Club Association chairman Andrea Agnelli and European Leagues president Lars-Christer Olsson has now been postponed.

One of the plans presented by UEFA would see 24 of 32 Champions League group teams back in the competition the following season.

In a letter obtained by AP, Ceferin wrote to Agnelli and Olsson wrote: “I have decided to postpone the meeting,” “I will send a new invitation as soon as I think that we are ready for a meaningful discussion.” “We are currently in the process of gathering feedback from our national associations,” Ceferin wrote, “and I feel — more generally — that a new discussion now would be premature as we are analyzing feedback and proposals coming from different parties.” Leading clubs and domestic league officials have been at odds over the proposals since they were presented earlier this year with the plans set to turn the Champions League into a largely closed competition.
