Daniel James was singled out for praise by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the youngster impressed on his Manchester United debut against Perth Glory.

United kicked off their pre-season tour with a straightforward 2-0 win courtesy of second half goals from Marcus Rashford and James Garner, but it was the performance of speed demon James that caught the eye.

The 21-year-old shot to prominence with Swansea in the Championship last season and, on the early evidence, will add the dynamism and versatility United’s attack sorely lacked towards the end of last season.

Solskajer had previously been impressed by the youngster’s application and focus in training, but he clearly isn’t short of confidence either.

After the game against Perth Glory, James revealed he intends to work in tandem with United’s full-backs and told the likes of Ashley Young how to get the best out of him as soon as he joined the club.

‘As soon as I came in I told the full backs my strengths and how I like to play,’ he told MUTV.

‘Youngy cut inside a lot and was playing me in quite a lot.

‘That’s important over the next few weeks to get that link up over the next few weeks to get the best out of them and the best out of me.

‘There were quite a few times I got in there, that’s what we want to do, we want to try and get in behind the opposition not just play in front and that’s what the gaffer has speaking to me a lot about doing that. And it’s important for me to do it for him.’

Reviewing his performance against the A-League side, meanwhile, Solskjaer said: ‘He’s [Daniel James] sharp. He started well. We’ll nurture him and he’ll be exciting to watch for many, many games.’
