Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pulled off a ‘masterstroke’ with the signing of Edinson Cavani, believes former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke.

The Uruguayan arrived on a free transfer over the summer after his release from Paris Saint-Germain with some questioning the signing of a 33-year-old on substantial wages.

However, Cavani has been impressive since arriving at Old Trafford, scoring three goals in the Premier League so far and also netting in his only appearance in the FA Cup.

Offering a different option to United’s other strikers and happy to make an impact from the bench, Cavani looks to be an ideal addition to the Red Devils’ front line and Yorke believes Solskjaer needs credit for bringing him in.

Yorke has drawn comparisons between Cavani’s arrival and some other huge names that arrived at Old Trafford late in their career, to great success.

‘You can see what he has brought to the table. Often when you bring in a big personality like Cavani, a younger player is taking that,’ Yorke told Sky Sports.

‘We have seen that with Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] before and we have seen [Robin] Van Persie come in and do a job and [Henrik] Larsson as well in that category. You can see Cavani has come in and done that.

‘What I like about Cavani is he is totally different to the rest of the players. His movement is outstanding and he is a seasoned campaigner. Although he hasn’t played in our league, that hasn’t deterred him and he wants to prove that he can play at this level even at this stage [of his career].

‘When you have that combination and that type of player, you are always going to bring along the younger players and they seem to have taken to him.

‘It was a great masterstroke from Ole by bringing him in.’

Cavani started in the 1-0 win over Burnley last time out and will be hoping to keep his place for the crunch game away to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils have leapfrogged their old rivals and now top the Premier League, three points clear of the Reds.

Solskjaer’s men can cement their position as legitimate title challengers if they avoid defeat to the champions at Anfield.
