FIFA has announced they are moving ahead with a controversial plan to expand the Club World Cup despite strong opposition from Europe’s elite sides.

It was claimed by the FIFA president that 90% of the associations in world football backed the expansion of the World Cup.



“From now, the world will see a real Club World Cup where the best teams in the world will compete to crown the champion.



A money-spinning new structure to expand the 2021 tournament to involve 24 teams, including eight from Europe, was strongly opposed by many - including Manchester United’s Ed Woodward.

“We have published a feasibility study where we came to the conclusion that yes, it is possible to move the World Cup from 32 teams to 48 teams providing certain conditions are met,” he added.
