Fellaini reflects on the two main factors that kept him at Man Utd so long

Marouane Fellaini may have left Manchester United for China in January, but the midfielder has revealed that he could have left a lot sooner.

David Moyes took Fellaini with him from Everton to Man Utd in summer 2013, but it took a while for the Belgian to become settled at his new club.

Eventually, though, Fellaini stayed at Old Trafford for five-and-a-half years, despite having several chances to leave.

The 31-year-old revealed all to Sportweek: “In 2014 I almost signed with Napoli, I had also talked to [Rafa] Benitez. I came from my first year with Manchester and it wasn’t the best.

“In that summer I played a great World Cup with Belgium and I didn’t know if I would have been with the Red Devils. I really thought about it, then I thought and I realised that United was a great club and the Premier League a great competition. I wanted to try again.

“A year ago there was this other opportunity, my agent spoke to Milan. But I know [Jose] Mourinho very well, I felt good with him and he wanted me to stay at United: it was easy to choose to stay a few more months. Mourinho for me is a great man and I still feel him.”

Fellaini has played 19 games and scored seven goals since sealing a switch to Shandong Luneng at the end of January, after over a decade in England with Everton and United.
