Jose Mourinho believes Ajax were a high-quality coach short of winning the Champions League this season.

Mourinho, who was sacked by Manchester United in December after overseeing the club's worst start to a league campaign in 28 years, believes Ajax had the players to succeed on the European stage this season but has reservations over the strategic ability of manager Erik ten Hag.

"Because this [Ajax] team doesn't have the capacity to adapt.

"After five minutes of the Europa League [of 2017, where United played] against Ajax, I said to my assistant: 'Relax, this final, it's going to Manchester.

"But to win a competition like the Champions League, you must also have strategic quality," he explained.

"But when they played against [and beat] Real Madrid and then against Juventus, I said: 'It's not difficult to win against Ajax'.

"It's been an atypical Champions Legaue, " Mourinho, who has twice won the competition, told L'Équipe.
