Pogba had been the man around Mourinho was supposed to construct a new, imperious United side around, after all, following his then world-record £89m move from Juventus in 2016 yet that substitution, made for tactical reasons, hinted all was not well.

The Frenchman has been a man transformed under Solskjaer, scoring four goals and registering three assists in four matches, but how has his new manager coaxed such devastating form out of him?

United were 3-1 up at half-time and with the game effectively won, Solskjaer took the opportunity to experiment, switching to a fluid 4-2-3-1 system after the break with Pogba moved into an advanced role.

There have been four matches in which Pogba has attempted over 90 passes this season; three have come while playing for Solskjaer.

In an interview in August, at the height of speculation that Pogba could leave United due to his poor relationship with Mourinho, Solskjaer stated if he were in charge of the club he would not only ensure that Pogba was kept on, but that he would 'build a team around him'.

Speaking after United's 4-1 win over Bournemouth in which Pogba scored twice, Solskjaer said: 'That today is a top, top performance for a midfielder, because it is all round,' while after the Huddersfield win he said: 'Paul is the same, he loves football and loves to go forward he has a big, big smile, and I have enjoyed working with him.

Solskjaer's public praise and arm around the shoulder approach to not just Pogba but all of United's players is the polar opposite to how Mourinho conducted himself; if Mourinho is a manager still rooted in old-school principles, Solskjaer is the antithesis, a modern coach who appreciates the value in keeping his players happy.
