Gary Neville has suggested Manchester United's ownership and Ed Woodward blocked Jose Mourinho from signing Jerome Boateng during last year's summer transfer window.

"Jose wanted to sign Boateng for £50million.

"What the club have realised, what the Glazers have realised and probably what Ed Woodward has realised in the last 18 months is that they've stopped saying 'yes' to managers," Neville said on Sky Bet's Big Season Debate.

The injury-prone Boateng was one of several central defenders under consideration by Mourinho in 2018, although United ultimately ended up signing nobody to strengthen in that area of the team.

"Man United were never going to get the best player in the world or the top 10 best players in the world this summer, they weren't going to come."

The MEN reported at the time Boateng was quickly dismissed by United due to his injury record.

Neville added: "I think for the first time this summer, there is a profile of player that it looks like they're going for.
