Gary Neville believes that Romelu Lukaku, Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini are ill-suited to playing under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as they do not provide sufficient pace on the counter attack.

A feature of Manchester United’s play under their caretaker manager has been the speed at which they have broken forward through the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial.

That was evident during their 1-0 win over Spurs at Wembley, when Rashford latched onto a Paul Pogba pass in behind the Spurs backline to fire beyond Hugo Lloris for the winning goal on the stroke of half-time.

Lukaku came on as a second half substitute but failed to make much of an impression on the game and Neville claimed the Belgian striker lacks the physical attributes to play as Solskjaer wants.

‘Looking at what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has done, he’s left out Lukaku, he’s left out Mata most of the time, it’s not a reflection on those two players but they do slow down attacks,’ Neville said on Sky Sports during the game.

‘They can’t move from one box to another quickly, all these players can run, along with the quality they have. Fellaini as well.

‘They are two players who can potentially add things from the bench but they can’t play at this pace, they can’t make the movements of Martial, Lingard, Rashford, Pogba, they are not capable of doing it, they haven’t got the physical attributes to do it.

‘It [pace] is the basis of every team, you look at Manchester City with Sterling and Sane or Liverpool with Salah and Firmino, every team has to have those players and with the likes of Mata, Lukaku and Fellaini in the team, it was too slow.’

Rashford has enjoyed an exceptional run of form since Solskjaer took charge last month, scoring four times in five league games under his new manager, all from a central striker role.

The 21-year-old’s finish against Spurs marked his third in as many games in the Premier League – a feat he never achieved under Louis Van Gaal or Jose Mourinho.

United looked dangerous every time they attacked Spurs during the game, although they had David De Gea to thank for holding onto their advantage with the Spaniard making 11 saves to deny Harry Kane and Dele Alli, in particular.

The win has seen sixth-place United move level on points with Arsenal in fifth and six behind Chelsea who are fourth.
