Former Manchester United youth coach Eric Harrison, who mentored the Class of '92, has died at the age of 81.

Harrison, once a lower-league player for Halifax, Hartlepool, Barrow and Southport, was diagnosed with dementia four years ago and passed away surrounded by family members.

Ron Atkinson brought Harrison to United as youth team manager in 1981 and Sir Alex Ferguson decided to keep him on as a coach.

Harrison is credited with bringing through some of United's legendary Class of '92 team which included Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and Gary Neville.

He led this side to the FA Youth Cup title in 1992 and many members of the side would go on to become legends of the club.

Gary Neville, who captained that side, shared a tribute to his former manager on Twitter, posting: 'We've lost our mentor , our coach and the man who made us.

'He taught us how to play, how to never give up, how important it was to win your individual battles and what we needed to do to play for Manchester United Football Club.
