Gary Neville has sensationally claimed that Manchester United are ‘closer than you think’ to winning the Premier League title and has backed them to do so before Liverpool.

The Red Devils finished sixth in a tumultuous campaign last season, while Liverpool lifted the Champions League and took the title race all the way to the final day of the season, finishing one point behind winners Manchester City on an enormous 97 points.

Liverpool are expected to duke it out with City once again this season, though Neville believes they will fall short and ultimately end up losing Mohamed Salah.

‘I don’t sit here every day as a United fan and think my world’s ending. I just see it as a cycle. I grew up for the first 18 years of my life and I didn’t see a league title at Manchester United. And the next 20 or 25 years was glorious. It was like heaven,’ said Neville on Sky Bet’s The Big Debate.

‘But now it’s tough. I don’t sit here every day thinking, “Oh my god if they don’t win the league this year, if they don’t do this this year, if they don’t get that player”. Where’s the panic?’

Asked if it’s concerning seeing other teams improve, he continued: ‘No it doesn’t concern me. It genuinely does not concern me because it can be corrected by a little bit of money on the stadium and good decisions in the boardroom and good decisions in the recruitment department.

‘What I’m saying is, Liverpool, City, Tottenham, all these clubs have had poor recruitment policies over the last 25 or 30 years at times. So United are going through one at the moment.

‘Eventually they will stumble upon the right recruitment system, the right recruitment people, they’ll get a great manager – hopefully that’s Ole – and they’ll start to win again. That’s going to happen.

‘I can guarantee you as clear as day, Manchester United will win again. They’ll probably win the league before Liverpool, in my opinion. And that’s not being disrespectful, they’ll probably win the league before Liverpool.’

Neville also believes that Salah is starting to consider a move away from Anfield (Picture: Getty)

Jamie Carragher interjected at this point, saying United won’t win a European Cup before Liverpool, to which Neville continued: ‘Maybe not, but I think they’ll win a league before Liverpool. They’re more ripe, they’re closer than you think and it’s not as bad as you think. That’s always the way it is.

‘And Liverpool, Salah’s going to leave in the next 12 months, I can see it already. He [Carragher] knows, he won’t say it. I can see it, you can feel it, you can smell it, you know when a player’s like…’
