Ryan Giggs says Manchester United need to improve their strength in depth if they are to challenge next season.

United are on a high after they qualified for next season's Champions League with a fine run of form in the second half of the season.

Yet, in the final few games United started to look a little jaded before they managed to beat Leicester City to secure their place in the top-four.

Speaking to Webby and O'Neill, United legend Giggs argued it was difficult for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to change the team during this period because he lacked options.

He said: "As we were on such a good run it was hard for Ole to change the team.

"He wanted to carry on that momentum and, eventually, because we were in lockdown and then playing the same team you're going to have that tail off towards the end.

"I didn't think it was a great performance against Leicester but it was gritty and we managed to go to a difficult place and get the result we needed."

Despite making the top four, Giggs believes United still need to strengthen this summer, but he is confident from what he has seen of under Solskjaer.

"We need strengthening," Giggs continued.

"I couldn't put a number on the players. I think Ole's had great transfer windows so far, not only with players but he's brought in good lads. It looks like the culture, atmosphere and team spirit is really good.

"If players who we can get in can enhance us if we have to defend and counter-attack but also break teams down when on the edge of the box to create those chances that we have been doing, especially since lockdown."

Giggs is not necessarily looking for players to come in and improve United's first-choice XI but pointed to Manchester City as an example of how important squad depth is in the Premier League.

He added: "The lads got a little bit tired. Having a strength in depth where you're able to change it and you're not really weakening.

"I think that's what City have had; if Sterling doesn't play then Mahrez comes in, or if Bernardo Silva doesn't play then Foden comes in. That sort of thing where it doesn't really weaken them but you're able to keep them fresh.

"Also, something I experienced at United, every day in training is competitive. The quality in training goes up as quality players have come in.Then, all of a sudden, the players who have done so well at the end of the season are looking over their shoulders.

"If you sign Sancho or Grealish, everyone is looking wondering 'is he going to take my place? No he's not, I want to take us onto the next level'. So you need that strength in depth, quality and good lads as well."
