Jose Mourinho admits he does not feel the same level as ‘joy’ towards Manchester United as he does his other former clubs.

The Red Devils appointed Mourinho as their manager in 2016 and the Portuguese boss led the club to the Europa League title and EFL Cup in his first season at Old Trafford.

Mourinho did not last until Christmas in his second campaign as Manchester United boss, however, and was dismissed with the team 19 points behind the league leaders.

‘It’s difficult for me to talk about Manchester,’ Mourinho told RMC Sport on Friday. ‘I can’t talk about them in the same joy and freedom as I talk about others [clubs].’

Manchester United initially enjoyed a superb run following Mourinho’s dismissal, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer leading the club to a stunning comeback victory over PSG.

On United’s memorable Champions League win, Mourinho said: ‘I think PSG was not ready for what happened.

‘For me they did not prepare themselves in the most serious way for a Champions’ League match.’

Mourinho also confirmed he hoped to return to management in the summer, having been without a job since his sacking at Old Trafford.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss added: ‘I have a lot of qualities and one of them is to respect other clubs and their management.

‘I have never spoken like “this club wanted me, they contacted me.” When I left Manchester United in December, I immediately took the decision I want to work from summer.

‘I hope to be back to work in July in a project I really like.’

Manchester United finished sixth in the Premier League this season, 32 points adrift of champions and rivals Man City.
