Juventus are prepared to offer Federico Bernardeschi in a swap deal for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, according to reports.

Smalling joined Roma on a season-long loan deal last summer after falling down the pecking order at United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The former England international has impressed during his debut season in Serie A and Roma are believed to be interested in keeping him permanently, though have been unable to agree a fee with United.

MEN Sport understands the defender is set to return to United this week as his loan deal is set to expire. Smalling's original loan agreement was extended but another extension to enable Smalling to compete in the Europa League this month will not occur.

Calciomercato claim Roma will face competition from Italian champions Juventus to sign the United star.

The report claims Juventus will attempt to lower United's asking price by offering Bernardeschi, 26, in a part-exchange deal.

Bernardeschi has made 37 appearances in all competitions under Maurizio Sarri, scoring two goals and assisting two more.

United are looking to bolster their forward line in the transfer window but are prioritising the signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

Elsewhere, a far-fetched report has linked United with a shock move for Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces an important decision this summer following David de Gea's slump in form and Dean Henderson's impressive loan spell at Sheffield United.

It is claimed by The Sun that the United boss has earmarked Schmeichel, 33, as a ready-made option to replace De Gea as he has doubts over Henderson's ability to become the first-choice stopper at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer previously said Henderson will become United's No.1 in the future, so that gives you an idea as to quite how bizarre this rumour is. You should take it with more than a pinch of salt.
