Kick It Out have called on Twitter to take action against “rampant discrimination” on its platform after Ashley Young became the latest player to receive racist abuse online.

“Yet another black player, this time Ashley Young, targeted with racist abuse on social media,” a spokesman tweeted.

Watford captain Troy Deeney received racist messages on Instagram after their FA Cup semi-final win over Wolves earlier this month, Wigan defender Nathan Byrne received racist abuse online, while Charlton forward Lyle Taylor was targeted on Twitter after a League One match against Bradford.

Young, who was playing out of position at left-back, was caught in possession by Messi for his first goal but some of the criticism the 33-year-old was subjected to turned vile and Kick It Out highlighted racist abuse from several accounts.

Young was targeted on Tuesday night after Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League following their 3-0 defeat by Barcelona.

His Watford team-mates Adrian Mariappa and Christian Kabasele said they had also received racist messages.

The abuse suffered by Young comes days after MK Dons player Chuks Aneke was targeted on Instagram following a fixture last Saturday.
