Manchester United keen on replacing David de Gea with Kasper Schmeichel

According to the Sun, Manchester United are considering bringing in Kasper Schmeichel to replace under-fire goalkeeper David de Gea.

Son of legendary United custodian Peter Schmeichel, Kasper has gone on to make a name for himself at Leicester City. A Premier League winner with the Foxes, the Dane is one of the best keepers in the league.

At 33, Schmeichel still has three years to go on his contract at the King Power stadium. He is seen as a more economical option compared to Jan Oblak. The Slovenian has a release clause of around £109million.

Manchester United want Kasper Schmeichel to replace David de Gea

De Gea has come in for much criticism following a spare of high-profile errors in recent months. More so, it was also reported earlier that United ‘coaches have been underwhelmed by the Spaniard’s performances in training.

Nine years since he replaced the colossal Edwin van der Sar, it might finally be time for De Gea to move on.

This could be bad news for Dean Henderson. The United rookie returns to Old Trafford after a stellar two-year loan spell at Sheffield United. Ole Gunnar Solskajer still has his reservation if Henderson is ready for the big time.

David de Gea made yet another error against Chelsea in the FA Cup final

With United back in the Champions League, we need a solid presence in goal when we face the biggest teams in Europe. According to the report, De Gea has lost the support of Solskjaer.

A win-win?

The Norwegian believes Henderson is not ready and will need two-three years to reach the levels required to star at United.

Henderson might not be ready to stick around as a backup, especially given Jordan Pickford’s lack of conviction in goal. The United rookie has a shot at making next summer’s Euros as England’s number one and will be keen to play regularly.

With Solskajer unconvinced that could be unlikely. Bringing in Schmeichel and loaning out Henderson could be a solution. The Dane is an excellent short-term solution while Henderson would get the playing time he deserves.

Henderson and Schmeichel have similar stats

By the time Henderson is ready, Schmeichel would have reached the twilight of his career.

The goalkeeping conundrum is something Solskajer must address and address quickly. With the Premier League set to restart on September 12, he cannot afford to delay it.
