For Manchester United, the full-back area has been somewhat of a problem recently. Ashley Young is doing a solid job, while Luke Shaw continues to be inconsistent.

Perhaps the long-term answer to that could well be young Demetri Mitchell, who is spending the season on loan at Hearts.

However today, The Scotsman write that the left-back could be set for ‘several months’ on the sideline after picking up a recurrence of a knee injury that he suffered last season.

Now, the 22-year-old will return to Old Trafford as United assess the severity of the issue, but this has to be a concern going forward.

We’ve seen it before. When young players suffer multiple serious injuries to the same part of the body, it can seriously hamper their development.

Mitchell’s a talented lad, he’s played a handful of first-team games while being a pre-season tour regular. You feel that this coming tour is make or break for the young man, and he’ll be hoping to be fit to see if he can make an impression on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

If he’s ruled out until April, that gives him perhaps a month or so to get some football under his belt before heading into the summer.

At this point, it’s a confidence thing more than anything. Hopefully, he doesn’t let this get on top of him and Mitchell can keep working hard and come back even stronger.
