Manchester United are unlikely to intervene as Tottenham close in on re-signing Gareth Bale.

Spurs are also believed to be close to signing Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilon, monitored by United due to uncertainty over their full-back situation.

Bale was open to joining United but no contact was made with his representatives and Spurs have accelerated plans for Bale to return to the club he left seven years ago.

Reguilon, 23, impressed United's recruitment department during his season on loan at Sevilla and has cemented his place in the Spain side, but United have the fit-again Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams available for the start of the season.

The MEN understands United had no plans to buy Bale, 31, in a permanent deal but had refused to rule him out as an emergency loan option amid an impasse in negotiations for Jadon Sancho.

Mourinho encouraged Bale to push for a move to United in 2017 but the Wales international refused despite losing his first-team status under Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane.

United were prepared to offer a world record fee of £86million to prise Bale from Tottenham in 2013 but the Welshman was set on joining Madrid.
