Manchester United chief Woodward has always insisted Pogba will not be going anywhere, despite Real Madrid’s determination to snap him up.

The France international has been seeking a move to the Bernabeu but the Red Devils have refused to budge, rejecting a low offer of £27million plus James Rodriguez earlier this month.

Manchester United could yet lose Pogba but Spanish newspaper AS claim the door has been firmly shut on Real Madrid for the time being.

It is said that Woodward, in particular, has been key for the midfielder staying put.

The United chief has faced intense criticism from fans, particularly after failing to land the likes of Paulo Dybala and Bruno Fernandes.

And the report says Woodward feared a backlash had he allowed Pogba to leave.

Real Madrid appear to have turned their attentions to Paris Saint-Germain's Neymar in order to appease manager Zinedine Zidane.

Zidane has made no secret of his desire to bring Pogba to the Bernabeu.

But with Real struggling to wear United down, they’re now trying to turn their attentions to Neymar instead.

Meanwhile, ESPN pundit Steve Nicol believes Pogba struggles for United because Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard don’t help him enough.

“I’d want him on my team, you know what he’s capable of,” Nicol said of the Red Devils midfielder.

“The problem right now is figuring is he not producing as consistently as we want because of him?

“Or is it because of the team he’s playing in?

“Lingard and Martial don’t help Pogba, for me.

“We’re expecting Pogba to do all the dirty stuff in the middle of the park but we expect him to get forward as well.

“Martial and Lingard, for me, are far too inconsistent and lose the ball too many times.

“So if you’re a guy who’s trying to make runs into the box and try and join in and two of the three strikers are continually [giving it away]…

“Or he’s thinking ‘are they keeping it or not?’.

“Because if he knows they’re keeping it, he can make all those runs and he can make those runs all day.

“But if he’s having to think twice, ‘well do I go because if I go and he loses it again, there’s a big hole left?’.

“So that’s another problem he has to figure out.”
