Marcus Rashford could play a more prominent role in Manchester United's remaining fixtures in the 2019/20 season as he took the next steps in his rehabilitation from his back injury.

Rashford has missed United's last 13 games with the injury that was set to keep him out for most of the season, before the Premier League was suspended in March.

The UK lockdown, however, has given Rashford time to work on his recovery without missing any more fixtures, and he returned to training on Friday at United's Aon Training Complex at Carrington to step up his fitness work.

United have nine games left in the Premier League as they chase a Champions League place, and they are still in the Europa League and FA Cup.

United say the postponement of fixtures and Rashford's continued recovery means the striker could feature 'more prominently' in the season's conclusion.

They said: "In a roundabout way, the postponement of football might yet allow him to feature more prominently in the campaign’s conclusion – although that is obviously down to the club’s medical staff, who have expertly guided him through his recovery during the lockdown period."

Earlier this month, Rashford spoke about his recovery, saying: “I have just been working, you know, I have sort of had my head down.

“It has been a tough period for me, the last few months, obviously being injured, but in the last few weeks I have been able to step on it a bit more, so I have just been getting my head down and working.”
