Manchester United have spoken to Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone about becoming the club’s next boss amid concerns that Mauricio Pochettino could stay at Tottenham, according to a report in the Express.

Despite the Norwegian's eye-catching start to life in the Old Trafford hot seat, Tottenham boss Pochettino is believed to be United's top target for the permanent manager's position at the end of the season.

But reports suggest that United are keeping their options open and have spoken made contact with Simeone, who has led the La Liga outfit to a league title and two Champions League finals during his  seven-year tenure at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Solskjaer became the first manager in the 140-year history of the Football League to win each of their opening five games in all competitions by a margin greater than two goals and matched Sir Matt Busby's club record of five wins from five opening games, set in 1946.

The former Middlesbrough captain led the Three Lions to a first World Cup semi-final appearance since 1990 at the 2018 edition of the tournament in Russia.

United sacked Jose Mourinho on December 18 after the Portuguese oversaw the club's worst start to a season in 28 years, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named his temporary replacement the following day.

Southgate signed a new four-year deal with the Football Association in October of last year that ties him to the national team until 2022.
