Manchester United’s board have decided to relax their rules around transfer recruitment and will give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer license to completely reshape the squad with at least five signings.

The Red Devils exited the Champions League on Tuesday night at the hands of Barcelona, suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat at Camp Nou, and Solskjaer admitted afterwards that his side have to make a huge step up to reach Barca’s level.

It has been widely reported that Solskjaer wants a number of new faces in the summer, and now ESPN report that United will back their new manager in a big way.

Although previous managers have been restricted to making, at most, just three big-money signings in a single window, that rule has been dispensed with for Solskjaer.

Instead, he will be allowed to bring in upwards of five marquee signings across every area of the pitch as he plans an ambitious overhaul of the playing staff.

United have granted the request partly because of the huge exodus that is expected to take place in the summer, with the likes of captain Antonio Valencia, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata all set to leave when their contracts expire.

A number of other players would be allowed to leave if big offers are received too, such as striker Romelu Lukaku – who has been linked with Inter Milan.

Solskjaer wants a new centre-back, right-back, central midfielder and attacking reinforcements, with the ring wing position a problem area for some time now.

The Norwegian – who used the word ‘rebuild’ after Tueday’s defeat – will be allowed to spend any money made from players sales alongside an already hefty transfer kitty, with the United board fully committed to backing their manager in a way they did not during Jose Mourinho’s reign.
