Manchester United have been charged by UEFA after objects including a bottle were thrown at Paris Saint-Germain star Angel Di Maria on his return to Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Di Maria appears to have avoided action for inciting fans after picking up the bottle of beer and pretending to drink from it, and for mouthing obscenities into the crowd following PSG's opening goal in their 2-0 Champions League win.

The 30-year-old Argentine was clearly fired up for the occasion and was booed by United fans who have not forgotten his ill-fated season at United in 2014-15 after a then British record £59.7million move from Real Madrid.

United now face a fine for the bottle incident involving Di Maria, who took the corner that led to PSG's opening goal for Presnel Kimpembe and also set up the second for Kylian Mbappe as the French champions seized control of the last 16 tie.

UEFA also looked at Di Maria's behaviour although it seems they will not take it further, deciding only to charge PSG over their fans setting off fireworks.

PSG coach Thomas Tuchel praised Di Maria for brushing off the jeers of the home fans, and claimed that Ashley Young should have received a second booking for shoving his old teammate into the perimeter wall in the second half.

'He plays many, many times here, and he knows there is a hill, so there was no need to push Di Maria into the fans.
