Manchester United coach Mike Phelan praised the strength of the Premier League’s North West sides after Liverpool dumped Bayern Munich out of the Champions Legaue.

Liverpool joined neighbours Manchester City and United in the quarter-finals, as Phelan’s side pulled off a stunning comeback against Paris Saint-Germain to progress.

City had the easiest draw, smashing Schalke 10-2 on aggregate, meaning it was a clean sweep of English sides in the last eight as Tottenham also progressed.

Well … European football is alive and well up and down the M62 #NorthernPowerhouse ??

Phelan was clearly impressed with Liverpool’s showing in Germany on Wednesday night and praised the Reds, and their North West rivals, after the 3-1 result against Bayern.

He said: ‘Well… European football is alive and well up and down the M62.’

Phelan has a long history at United having been Sir Alex Ferguson’s right-hand man for many years, and returned to link up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November.

The assistant coach has helped produce a remarkable resurgence at the club, but United fans were not that impressed to hear Phelan praising Liverpool.

Mike you’re a legend and your Twitter is class but… couldn’t care less about any northern team but United.
