Manchester United have still to agree a new contract with David de Gea and the goalkeeper will be eligible to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of next season if the club fail to make a breakthrough in negotiations.

His level of consistency took a turn for the worse at last summer's World Cup, but De Gea remains among the world's elite - if a tier below Barcelona's Marc-André ter Stegen and Atlético's Jan Oblak on current form.

De Gea has won everything available to him at United but Europe's premier competition has eluded him, with United suffering their highest margin of defeat in European competition with Tuesday night's 3-0 defeat against Barcelona inflicting a 4-0 aggregate loss on the Reds.

"I'm really happy to have renewed my deal," Oblak said of his renewal.

I'm really happy to stay here."

Oblak was linked with a move to Old Trafford in 2017, with De Gea attracting interest from Real Mardid, and the Slovenia international was understood to be keen on joining United.

De Gea's ambition to add a Champions League winner's medal to his collection could see the former Atlético Madrid stopper move to pastures new when his current deal expires, and United could be tasked with the considerable challenge of finding an adequate replacement for De Gea sooner than they expected.
