The days when Manchester United had one of the most feared midfields in the Premier League are an increasingly distant memory for Old Trafford regulars.

The current United midfield has more holes than a sieve.

He could prove expensive, as many domestic players are, but this is a market United are keen to focus on and Villa's No.7 could prove to be two players in one given his midfield versatility.

Ideally United need two or three central midfielders over the next few transfer windows, but with so many holes to be plugged they could look for a versatile all-rounder to add some much needed depth in the centre of the pitch.

McGinn has done a bit of everything for Villa's midfield so far.

The 24-year-old is often used as a shuttler in Dean Smith's midfield, with Douglas Luiz playing the most defensive role and Jack Grealish the most offensive, but McGinn's numbers suggest he would be equally adept in covering for either of his teammates.

Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera have both departed without being replaced and when the Belgian beanpole Fellaini is so clearly being missed then you soon realise this is a midfield in serious need of investment.
