Manchester United wonderkid Mason Greenwood dedicated his goal against Brighton on Tuesday to outgoing academy graduate Angel Gomes.

The 18-year-old netted the opening goal in the Red Devils' 3-0 win at the Amex Stadium, brandishing an 'A' sign as a tribute to his friend Angel as he wheeled away in celebration.

Gomes, 19, will leave the club on Wednesday and become a free agent after rejecting a £30,000-a-week new deal at Old Trafford.

Greenwood appeared to promise to dedicate the goal to Gomes, with the young forward tweeting after the game: 'A promise is a promise 'A' @angelgomes47'.

And the young midfielder appreciated Greenwood's tribute, posting on his Instagram story: 'No words! I love you bro, special special player, thanks for the dedicated goal @masongreenwood'.

Greenwood and Gomes are close friends having both come through United's academy structure in their teenage years.

Gomes was once billed a future Manchester United first-team regular having impressed for the club's youth teams in recent years.

But the 19-year-old will instead leave Old Trafford having made only ten appearances in all competitions in United colours, the majority of which have come this season.

Greenwood, meanwhile, will carry on being a regular member of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's first-team squad, and his strike at Brighton means he has more Manchester United goals than Marcus Rashford did before turning 19.

The 18-year-old winger now has 13 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils, while Rashford only mustered 12 before his 19th birthday in October 2017.

Rashford has since gone on to score 64 goals in 204 first-team appearances in all competitions for Manchester United.

Speaking about Greenwood after the Brighton win, United boss Solskjaer said: 'He played fantastically.

'He's a special kid, we know when he gets faced up and looking he looks dangerous. His hold-up and link up play was great today.

'He can go inside or outside, he is developing into a fine player. He's just as good with his right foot and his left.'

Gomes, meanwhile, has been linked to several of Europe's top clubs, including United's top-four rivals Chelsea.

However, Blues head coach Frank Lampard played down the rumours linking Chelsea to snapping up free agent Gomes.

Lampard said: 'I can elaborate to the point that it's never been mentioned at my end.'
