Matic on what Man Utd "cannot allow" Liverpool to do as ambition questioned

Nemanja Matic says Manchester United simply "cannot allow" the sort of romp to the title that they were forced to watch Liverpool pull off this season.

United's great rivals strolled to their first league title in 30 years and a first in the Premier League era with a total of 99 points, although their tally of 82 before coronavirus lockdown would have been enough for them to win the league there and then.

Liverpool ultimately sealed glory when second-placed Manchester City lost at Chelsea with seven games remaining, securing the earliest ever Premier League title in terms of games remaining - even if it was the latest on the calendar.

United's strong end to the season ensured they finished third, but still 33 points behind their Merseyside rivals, and Matic says that sort of showing won't be good enough next season.

"Me, personally, I would like to win the Premier League with Manchester United. I think that our club always needs to fight for the title," Matic told the club magazine, Inside United

"We always need to try to do the best for this club, which we are doing at the moment, and I think we cannot allow any club to win the league seven or 10 games before the season finishes. So we have to fight until the end.

"Of course, we have a young team, but this cannot be an excuse. I think these young players already have a few seasons behind them playing. So, from the next season, we have to fight for the title. I don’t know if we’re going to win [it] but I’m sure that we can fight until the end.

"That’s my personal target and I think the rest of my team-mates think the same."

United are back in action in the Europa League against LASK Linz on Wednesday.
