Mauricio Pochettino has insisted he wants to be the manager to take Spurs to the next step amid continued speculation over whether he could join Manchester United.

Since Jose Mourinho was sacked by United last month, Pochettino has emerged as a leading candidate to take charge in the summer, alongside current caretaker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and England manager Gareth Southgate.

Nevertheless, while United remain one of the biggest clubs in the world, they could find it difficult to lure Pochettino away from a project that he started in 2014 with Spurs currently ahead of their top-six rivals in the Premier League table.

Arguably the one disappointment of Pochettino’s reign in charge of Spurs is that he has been unable to win a trophy, yet the Argentine suggested that the club’s transformation into a genuine contender for titles deserves greater credit.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Pochettino said: ‘The way we competed in the last game against Chelsea, not playing in the best way but in the end winning the game, showed that we are more mature and something different is growing.

‘The most important thing is we are there fighting, when five years ago it was a hope, a wish, a dream to be with the big sides fighting and talking about titles. That is a massive success and sometimes people don’t realise.

‘The next step is going to be bigger. I think Tottenham is preparing to be one of the most exciting clubs in the world and hopefully it’s with us. If it’s not with us, the legacy is going to massive for the next guy’s to work here with all the tools to work and be a real contender.’

When asked whether he would like to be the manager that leads Spurs into the next stage of their development, he responded: ‘Of course, of course. I am so happy here, so happy.’

Although Spurs’ wait for a trophy has been extended to 11-years, they are still competing on all four fronts this season and are in with a chance of reaching the Carabao Cup final following their 1-0 semi-final first leg victory over Chelsea on Tuesday.

They are also third in the Premier League table, face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last-16 and are through to the FA Cup fourth round where they will play Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Pochettino was reported to be ‘angered’ and ‘irritated’ by the speculation linking him to Manchester United last week and there have been reports that United are growing increasingly worried that he could remain in north London.
