Maurizio Sarri says he has achieved the goals asked of him in his first season as Chelsea manager, but is still unsure whether or not he will have a job at Stamford Bridge next season.

The Italian has secured a return to the Champions League for the Blues after finishing third in the Premier League with a draw at Leicester on the final day of the season.

Sarri has also led Chelsea to the Europa League final where they will play Arsenal, giving him the chance to claim some silverware in his first campaign in charge in west London.

The 60-year-old says that a Champions League return was the only thing asked of him on his arrival at Chelsea, but he has not yet been assured of his position going forward.

When asked if he will still be at Stamford Bridge next season, Sarri said: ‘I think so, but I am not sure.

‘I can say only that the club asked me for the Champions League, and we reached the target.

‘As you know very well, I love English football. I love the Premier League; it’s fantastic and the level is the best in the world, I think. The atmosphere in the stadiums is wonderful. I would like very much to stay here.’

Things have turned around significantly for Sarri after going through a seriously sticky patch earlier in the season.

A 4-0 defeat to Bournemouth and 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City at the end of January and start of February piled the pressure on the Italian, before Chelsea were ousted from the FA Cup by Manchester United.

However, they were unfortunate to lose the Carabao Cup final on penalties and then turned their league form around to make things look a bit rosier for the former Napoli boss.

‘The season was really very difficult for us,’ continued Sarri. ‘But I think at the end we are happy because we were in trouble three months ago, but were able to react very well.

‘In the end we are in the third position and reached the target of the club – the Champions League.

‘We played a final against Man City in the League Cup, and before the final in the League Cup we played against Liverpool and Tottenham, the two finalists of the Champions League.

‘Now we have to play a very important match, the final in the Europa League. At the moment the season is very good, but the season can become wonderful.’
