Nemanja Matic has warned Liverpool and Manchester City that his side have shown they have what it takes to win the title this season after a hard-fought win at Burnley.
United moved three points clear of Liverpool ahead of Sunday's Anfield showdown with a 1-0 win at Turf Moor thanks to Paul Pogba's second-half volley and Matic hailed it as a crucial victory.
“We’ve played 17 games, we’re top of the table, that shows something, it’s not five or six games, after 17 games it’s definitely not lucky, there is a quality but we can’t relax, we have to concentrate until the end and go game by game.
And Matic felt it was exactly the kind of game that showcased United's title credentials and how they've improved in recent months.
“This kind of win shows we’re ready to compete for the title," the midfielder told MUTV.
United were much the better side in the second half and Matic felt it was an example of his side knowing they have the quality on the pitch to hurt opponents at any moment.
United now head to Anfield on Sunday knowing victory would take them six points clear of the defending champions, but Matic believes they've already shown that their rise to the top of the table this season is no fluke.
