Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was wise to rest his key Manchester United players ahead of the sides’ much-anticipated clash.

Mourinho returns to Old Trafford for the first time as an opposition manager this evening and the 56-year-old will be looking to make it four wins from four games since replacing Mauricio Pochettino.

The Special One has overseen victories over West Ham, Olympiakos and Bournemouth and spirits are high once again at Spurs after a miserable start to the campaign.

In preparation for tonight’s match, Solskjaer selected seven teenagers and three full debutants in an inexperienced starting XI in Astana which went on to lose 2-1.

Mourinho claims it was a ‘clever’ decision, considering the Red Devils had already qualified for the Europa League knockout stages.

‘Big game, two historical clubs, always a big game and we are both involved in let’s say a difficult situation, because we want more, we want better,’ Mourinho told Tottenham’s official website.

‘I believe it’s the same with them and it will be a good game in a moment where there are lots of matches. It’s the same for everybody.

‘They were clever in that they were already qualified in the Europa League, so they rested all their players in the game at Astana, so they have one less game than us but that’s football.

‘Of course, it will be a difficult match for us, but also a difficult match for them.’

Mourinho claims he faces his stiffest test yet as Tottenham manager against a United team with ‘great support’ at Old Trafford.

‘We need to find a way to try to be alert with their key points, because they have key attacking points that are really important,’ he added.

‘At the same time, we cannot lose our identity, our way of playing, the way we’ve played in the last few matches. I’m not going to change this approach.

‘They are probably the best team we’ve played over the four matches with me, no doubts about it, also, Old Trafford, great support for them.

‘But we go there with only one objective.’
