Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be boosted by a '£60m' transfer budget during the January window, according to a report.

With Solskjaer getting off to a flying start as manager, the United board are reportedly ready to back him in order to finish in the top four with a '£50-60m' budget.

The Daily Star quote football finance expert Keiran Maguire, who says with Champions League qualification looking more likely after Solskajer's four league wins in charge, United could back the caretaker manager to reinforce his squad.

The reports says Champions League qualification is worth up to £70m for the club, and United will suffer financially without playing in the competition.

United are in the market for a central defender, with Kaldiou Koulibaly of Napoli and Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld frequently mentioned.

However, the chances of United making such a snap decision are slim as they are a club who like to plan ahead.

Ed Woodward reportedly vetoed various targets in the summer, so this report would be a drastic departure from his attitude to transfers in recent years.
