Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Alexis Sanchez will have a significant role to play for Manchester United this season and played down suggestions he would leave or has been demoted to the reserves.

The Chilean, the highest-paid player at Old Trafford, is still recovering from an injury picked up at the Copa America and there have been reports that he wants to leave this month - with the transfer window still open abroad. There have also been reports of a bust-up with Mason Greenwood, while The Sun claimed Solskjaer was so eager to get rid of Sanchez he was prepared to make him train with the reserves.

Solskjaer is adamant Sanchez does still have a future at the club, particularly with United so light on senior attacking options after the deadline day sale of Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan.

He's part of our squad and he's a very, very good player.

'He's just had a couple of weeks - three weeks now - so he's a few weeks behind the rest but close to being part of it.

He continued: 'Well with Alexis we don't have the biggest forward line in numbers so Alexis might end up playing a lot more games than you expect.

On how he's progressing, Solskjaer added: 'We had a behind-closed-doors game and he's training, he's doing a little bit of extras, and he'll be gradually integrated into more and more playing time.
