Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has refused to argue with Paul Scholes’ assertion that Manchester United need to ‘write off’ two years to get back into title contention.

“I think you almost have to write United off for the next two years - this team - until Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has cleared everything he wants out; has four or five transfer windows,” he said.

“United are going to be behind Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham.

It’s difficult for young players to come into a team like that.” Ahead of Saturday’s crunch clash with Leicester, Solskjaer responded to those comments, saying: “Paul knows what it is to be a Man United player and looking at the diff between us and City and Liverpool last year, you don’t expect us to challenge straight away.

United have recorded their worst start since 1992-93 and already look to be cut adrift from Liverpool and Manchester City at the top.

“I think this is United at the minute; you have to be patient with the young players but the experienced players have to step up.

“But he can see things are going in the right direction and we feel we’re on the right track.”
