Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits he agrees with the sentiment in Paul Scholes’ belief that Manchester United are at least two years away from challenging for the Premier League title.

The Norwegian has been tasked with a significant rebuilding task following the unsuccessful reigns of Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal which were characterised by lavish spending.

Solskjaer has placed his faith in a crop of emerging young talents and based his transfer strategy around recruiting enthusiastic British talents.

The likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James have already begun to vindicate that strategy while academy graduates Mason Greenwood and Angel Gomes are expected to make major first team impacts this season.

After the 1-1 draw at Southampton prior to the international break, Solskjaer’s former teammate Scholes expressed his concern that United still had a huge amount of ground to make up on the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

Scholes said: ‘I think you almost have to write United off for the next two years, this team, until Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has cleared everything he wants out, has four or five transfer windows.

‘United are going to be behind Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham.

‘I think this is United at the minute, you have to be patient with the young players, but the experienced players have to step up.’

Responding to Scholes’ prediction ahead of Saturday’s match against Leicester, Solskjaer said: ‘Paul knows what it is to be a Man United player.

‘Looking at the difference between us and City and Liverpool last year you don’t expect us to challenge straight away.

‘But, he can see things are going in the right direction and we feel we’re on the right track.’
