You would probably have got fairly long odds had you placed a bet a year ago that, come January 2021, Manchester United would be top of the Premier League table thanks to a goal and man of the match performance from the wantaway Paul Pogba.

But that’s precisely where United find themselves: top of the pile, three points above Liverpool and with the chance to extend that lead over the champions at Anfield on Sunday.

At this stage last season, United trailed Liverpool by 24 points.

You have to go back to December 2012 and Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge to find the last time United were top at this stage of a campaign.

United fought for every inch here and in the end had a volley from Pogba to thank for the three points and a ninth win in 11 league games The Frenchman’s agent may have declared his client’s desire to quit Old Trafford but Pogba’s reaction since then has been exemplary and he was a towering force against Burnley, match winner and midfield totem.

Spotting Pogba on the edge of the penalty area, the England forward clipped a pass to him and from there Pogba met the ball with a sweet volley that zipped past Pope with the help of a deflection off Matt Lowton.

Hard to believe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s future was still being questioned a couple of months back.
