Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has lost his first game as caretaker manager of Salford City.

Scholes' side had the chance to take the lead from the spot after Ian Henderson had been fouled by Port Vale defender Leon Legge, but Scott Brown had his penalty saved and Henderson side footed the rebound over the bar.

The Valiants punished Salford with a late strike from winger Cristian Montano which proved to be the winner.

Paul Scholes suffered defeat in his first game as caretaker boss of Salford City at Vale Park

The 45-year-old former Oldham manager said: 'It was difficult to take, we played some really good football at times, we missed the penalty and the rebound and a good chance towards the end as well, I wasn't too displeased with the team, I thought they tried to play the way we wanted to play.'

'With the quality that's in this team, especially in the forward line you'd expect a couple of goals from that, but today wasn't to be.'

Looking towards Salford's next game at home to Southend on Tuesday Scholes said: 'If we play a similar type of way that we played tonight, I think we'll be ok.'

28-year-old Colombian winger Cristian Montano scored an 86th-minute winner for Port Vale

Scholes is part of a consortium of former Manchester United players who own the League Two club.

He was appointed caretaker manager after Graham Alexander was sacked on Monday.
