Paul Scholes cannot see Manchester United winning the Premier League next season and says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to spend £200m to rebuild the squad.

Solskjaer made an incredible start to his managerial career at Old Trafford, helping United climb up the Premier League table and progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

But the Red Devils have won just two of their last six games in all competitions, suffering defeats to Wolves and Arsenal as well as Barcelona.

Manchester United are currently fifth in the Premier League – two points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea – and Scholes says his former team-mate ‘has a really big job on his hands’.

‘I don’t think we’re particularly close [to a title challenge] at the minute,’ the club legend told BT Sport. ‘I think you’re looking at what, a third or fourth manager?

‘And it feels like you almost need a full rebuild again – a lot of people are expecting United, and I think probably Ole himself, are expecting United to challenge for the league next year.

‘At this minute I just can’t see it. I know Liverpool have been challenging this year but they were showing signs from the season before and the season before that.

‘They were looking like a team who could challenge for the Premier League and they’ve proven that they will do that.

‘With United there’s nothing telling me, with what I’m seeing, they are going to be challenging for the league next year.’

The Red Devils have been linked with a number of lucrative summer moves and Scholes added: ‘Give Ole a summer transfer window and he’s going to have to improve this team massively.

‘Not just by new players, but with some of the players that he’s got – and he’s got a really big job on his hands.’

Manchester United travel to Barcelona today for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie, which takes place on Tuesday. Barca won the opening match at Old Trafford 1-0.
