Premier League clubs will attend a sports cyber security summit on Wednesday — two months after Manchester United were held to ransom by hackers.

The National Cyber Security Centre will give guidance to over 180 representatives from clubs and organisations across several sports in how to protect themselves from cyber criminals.

Among those attending will be 11 top-flight clubs and 35 from the EFL.

Last year, the agency revealed that cyber crime targeting professional teams included an attempt to sabotage a transfer involving a Premier League club. And in November Sportsmail revealed United were victims of a hack the club described as ‘a sophisticated operation by organised cyber criminals’.

Some of the club’s IT systems were disabled by the breach and staff were told not to use email after United fell victim to the ransomware virus, believed to originate from an email phishing scam.

Sarah Lyons, the NCSC’s deputy director for economy and society, said: ‘It’s great to see so many sports clubs and organisations coming together like this and showing they take cyber security seriously.’
