The visitors equalised through Dele Alli on 39 minutes but, undeterred, Rashford maintained his performance level in the second half. Almost immediately after half-time, he won a penalty in front of the Stretford End. Despite a lengthy wait for VAR, he duly slotted it home into the bottom corner of the net.

Marcus was voted the club’s Man of the Match by users of our Official App, with a massive 87 per cent of the votes cast – significantly more than fellow nominees Jesse Lingard and Scott McTominay.

In his post-match interview with Amazon Prime Video, our no.10 was naturally delighted with the win…

Watch Rashford's brace that earned our brilliant win over Tottenham.

Marcus, was that the best team performance so far this season?
“That's the hardest we've had to work to get a result, but I think the position we're in now we want these games, we want to show people we can play against the top teams. We know we need to improve against the other teams, but game by game we're just trying to improve.”

Is there a feeling that you should have been out of sight by half time?

“Yeah, we had a lot of shots. I wouldn't say clear-cut chances, but we had a lot of shots on goal, the keeper made a few good saves, but that's football. Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don't. Today they didn't but we rounded it out and got the result.”How much are you enjoying your football at Old Trafford? You are scoring goals for fun…
“It's been obviously a happy time. It's always nice playing in front of the home fans and you just want to keep continuing and for me it's about scoring as much as I can and just helping the team.”

You had to wait more than two minutes to take the penalty. How much pressure was on you?

“You're just trying to stay calm. With the VAR it's a while before you get to take the spot kicks, so it's just about trying to stay cool, calm and collected and put the ball in the net.”WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT MARCUS

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer:

“That’s the best performance he’s had during the year I’ve been here. He was strong, direct, taking people on, inside and outside, with no fear. That’s what we want - we want to see boys enjoying themselves. That’s what the Stretford End want to see. That’s what he’s been brought up on: seeing [Ryan] Giggsy or [Andrei] Kanchelskis - actually, maybe he’s too young for Kanchelskis - but that says everything about the boy and the potential. He’ll be excellent.”

Scott McTominay:

“Difficult to contain? It's impossible sometimes when you see some of the stuff that he's doing. It's a breath of fresh air to watch a player who is a young kid from Manchester, coming up and doing some of the things that he's doing. He's a pleasure to watch and I just want to be a part of it as well.”

David De Gea:

“Marcus is in very good form and showing his talent. He is a great finisher. he scored two and could have scored even more goals. We are happy that he is scoring goals for us and playing as he is doing. He is a great player.”

United legend Lou Macari: “If you look at the two centre-forwards in the match - the one from Spurs, Harry Kane, has been getting all of the plaudits about being the best in the world. Sometimes there are question marks over Marcus, but it was a mismatch tonight. Marcus won that battle by a mile.”

The Mirror journalist David McDonnell: “Rashford has got 12 goals now this season and that is one short of his best-ever haul of 13, so he is scoring goals for fun and oozing confidence. He could have had a hat-trick inside the first half-an-hour. He was a constant threat and that is the kind of form you want to be taking into a big game at the weekend, such as the Manchester derby.”
