Things got off to the worst possible start for United when the hosts broke forward on two minutes and Emil Krafth’s right-wing cross was flicked into his own net by the unfortunate Luke Shaw.

We responded well with some good possession and a couple of half chances through the lively Marcus Rashford, who led the line in Anthony Martial’s absence. After Bruno Fernandes had rightly had a superb equaliser ruled out for offside, the Reds drew level on 23 minutes when Harry Maguire headed home Juan Mata’s corner. Ole’s men could have had more before the break but for a couple of good stops from Karl Darlow in the Magpies goal.

Five minutes after the break David De Gea produced a stunning one-handed save from point-blank range as Callum Wilson poked the ball goalwards. VAR then deemed Jamal Lewis had fouled Rashford in the box soon after, but Bruno Fernandes saw his penalty saved – the first he has failed to convert for the Reds.

United kept the pressure up and we got our just rewards late on as Fernandes finished off a sublime team move, Aaron Wan-Bissaka netted his first-ever career goal and the excellent Rashford added a fourth.
