Rio Ferdinand does not believe that David de Gea is solely to blame for Lionel Messi’s second goal at the Camp Nou on Tuesday night.

Manchester United came into the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash with Barcelona hoping to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg at Old Trafford last week.

The second goal in particular raised eyebrows as the usually safe David de Gea spilled a tame strike from the Argentine to double Barca’s lead.

While on surface it appears that the fault lies solely at the feet - and hands - of De Gea, former Man United defender Ferdinand believes that the Spaniard shouldn’t have had to deal with the shot in the first place.

But he still admits that even with Fred’s mistake, De Gea should have been more than capable of dealing with what was a routine strike from Messi.

Speaking on BT Sport at half-time in the game, Ferdinand questioned the work of United midfielder Fred in the build up to the goal as he failed to stop Messi getting the shot off.

He added: “But here, David de Gea, who’s been in superb form for the last three or four years.
