Paul Scholes says Manchester United regularly lack creativity because their sub-par defence means they often have to set their midfield up in a conservative manner.

United legend Scholes believes the two-man holding midfield set-up is fine for away matches when United attack on the counter, but that it should be a different story on home soil.

Away from home is what suits Manchester United, protecting the back four, pressing and giving it to players who can create on the counter-attack.

So we need those two sitting players to protect the back four.

“I think at home, where you can have a lot of the ball, I don’t think the quality is quite there for the both of them.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer once again picked two holding midfielders for United's home game against West Brom as they looked to end their poor run of form at Old Trafford.

Scholes said: “The midfield they play is okay when you’re playing away from home when you have to get to the ball, you have to take the ball off people and can play on the counter-attack at times.
