Sir Alex Ferguson has paid tribute to Eric Harrison, who has sadly passed away at the age of 81.

The legendary Manchester United youth coach passed away on Wednesday evening following a long battle with mixed dementia.

Harrison played a pivotal role in the development of youth players at United during a 27-year spell at the club which spanned from 1981 until 2008.

In total 18 future internationals would be guided by Harrison during his time at United, and Ferguson has paid tribute to his close friend who he regards as 'one of the greatest coaches of our time'.

Harrison fronted a revamped scouting network under the Scottish manager and played a pivotal role in developing legendary players including David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers.

“He built character and determination in those young players and prepared them for the future.

The coach had originally been hired to work under Ron Atkinson during his tenure at Old Trafford, but was kept on by Ferguson following his appointment as first-team manager in 1986.
